Mynydd Isa have great pedigree in Welsh football as Mynydd Isa FC were a well-known name in northern Welsh football. The old club managed to get to the Cymru Alliance, and finished as high as fourth position before having to fold in 2009. The current side were originally founded as Ewloe Spartans in 2015, but a move to the Argoed Sports and Social Club at Mynydd Isa in 2016 meant the club changed to its current name of Mynydd Isa Spartans.

In their first season as Mynydd Isa, the Spartans gained promotion to the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) by finishing as runners-up in the 2016-17 North East Wales League. Since then, they have spent their time competing in the WNL Division One, finishing as high as sixth position. The club did exceptionally well in the 2019-20 Welsh Cup, reaching the first round proper by knocking out third-tier sides Llanuwchllyn and Denbigh Town, before being knocked out by Cymru North side Llanfair United by a 3-5 scoreline.
