STICKER ALBUM – GWYNEDD

INTRODUCTION

This is a continuation of my side project to take pictures or collect photos of all the Welsh football grounds in the top six tiers, and then turn them into a sticker style format. Initially this was something I just did to test out my Photoshop skills, but considering the popularity it achieved on Twitter and Facebook, I decided to expand it and try to encompass the whole of the country – a big task!

Anyway I have decided to group the grounds into their respective Welsh counties, so the fifth county I have done is the north-west county of Gwynedd.

The links to the other counties’ sticker albums can be found below:

GWYNEDD

As of the 2018-19 season, there are 24 grounds within Gwynedd that are used by the 24 clubs currently playing within the Welsh football pyramid. Historically, Gwynedd was separated into two counties – northern Caernarfonshire and southern Merionethshire, and as such, the clubs have been separated into their respective sub-counties.

Traditionally, the strongest clubs within Gwynedd have been based in Caernarfonshire with Bangor City being the most successful in history, but with Caernarfon Town and Porthmadog also having some success. Recently Bala Town have ensured Merionethshire has earned some success also, by winning the Welsh Cup as recently as 2017, and are currently playing in the Welsh Premier League alongside Caernarfon Town this season.

Caernarfonshire

Only Caernarfon Town are in the top tier this season, with Bangor City and Porthmadog within the second tier of the Cymru Alliance. Teams within this county will play within the Welsh Alliance League system for tiers 3 and 4, and play in the local Gwynedd League for tier 5. A number of Caernarfonshire clubs do apply their trade in the Anglesey League, which is considered sixth tier in the Welsh football pyramid.

Merionethshire

Teams within Merionethshire tend to be spread out amongst a number of leagues dependant on their location. As with the Caernarfonshire clubs, a number of the north-western located clubs play in the Welsh Alliance League. However eastern clubs such as Bala Town and Llanuwchllyn compete (or have competed in regards to WPL side Bala Town) within the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) setup due to their closer proximity to the Wrexham-based sides. Whilst the southern-based sides, such as Dolgellau and Tywyn Bryncrug play within the Mid Wales League pyramid, with Aberdyfi playing against other west coastal clubs within the Ceredigion League (representing tiers 5 & 6).
